Wai-iti Swing Bridge, Nelson Tasman Cycle Trail Trust

Product used: FRP Mini Mesh Grating

“I was surprised that the price of FRP was not significantly more than timber decking. There are savings in installation costs and FRP removes the need for plastic or steel mesh. Factoring in lower maintenance costs and excellent skid resistance, FRP is our preferred product for cycle trail bridge decks.”

We worked with the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trail Trust to significantly improve the deck of a swing bridge over the Wai-iti River, near Wakefield. The existing timber deck was replaced with our FRP Mini Mesh Grating, improving the slip resistance for cyclists and pedestrians who use the bridge. FRP is strong and a fraction of the weight compared to steel. It doesn’t rot, warp, or decay from moisture exposure, making it particularly cost-effective and safe for cycling/walking bridges over rivers and in damp areas.
